Water Treatment System Refresh: Iron Filter Re-Bedding & 62-Gallon Pressure Tank Upgrade
Water Treatment System Refresh with Iron Filter Re-Bedding and 62-Gallon Pressure Tank Upgrade
A Complete Water Treatment System Refresh and Pressure Tank Upgrade
After a service call last year and a follow-up review of the system with the customer this year, it was determined that several key components needed attention to keep the water treatment system operating properly and reliably. Based on the condition of the equipment and the customer’s water quality needs, the decision was made to dump and re-bed the mixed bed iron/pH unit and the iron unit.
This service by Barlow Water Systems helped restore proper filtration performance, improve system efficiency, and ensure cleaner, better-quality water throughout the home.
Re-Bedding the Iron/pH and Iron Units
Over time, filtration media can become exhausted, compacted, or fouled with iron and other minerals. When that happens, the system may no longer perform as intended, even if the equipment itself is still in good condition.
For this service, both units were opened, emptied, and re-bedded with fresh media:
- Mixed bed iron/pH unit
- Iron filtration unit
Re-bedding these tanks allows the system to regain its ability to properly treat iron and balance pH, helping protect plumbing fixtures, appliances, and household water quality.
A properly maintained filtration system is essential for consistent water clarity, odor control, and long-term equipment performance.
Valve Body Repairs: Pistons and Seals Replaced
In addition to replacing the media, the valve bodies on both units were serviced. The pistons and seals were replaced on both valve bodies to ensure reliable operation during normal service and backwash cycles.
These components are critical because they control the movement of water through the system. Worn pistons or seals can lead to:
- Improper regeneration or backwashing
- Water bypassing the treatment media
- Reduced filtration performance
- Leaks or inconsistent valve operation
By replacing these parts, the system is now better equipped to operate smoothly and efficiently.
Pressure Tank Issue Discovered
During the inspection, the technicians at Barlow Water Systems found the pressure tank to be in poor condition and no longer functioning properly. The elbow underneath the tank was also rusted, creating a potential risk for leaks and future failure.
Because the pressure tank plays an important role in maintaining steady water pressure and reducing pump cycling, replacing it was the best long-term solution.
Pressure Tank Replacement
The old pressure tank was removed and replaced with a new sixty-two-gallon pressure tank. This upgrade provides better water storage capacity and helps support more consistent pressure throughout the home.
The installation included:
- Removal of the failed pressure tank
- Installation of a new 62-gallon pressure tank
- New stainless steel tank cross
- New PEX piping
- Replacement of rusted and compromised connections
Using stainless steel and new PEX piping helps improve durability and reduces the risk of corrosion-related issues in the future.
System Backwashing and Final Testing
Once the re-bedding, valve repairs, and pressure tank replacement were completed, all units were thoroughly backwashed until the water ran clean. This step is important after media replacement because it helps flush out fines, debris, and loose particles from the new media.
Before leaving the job, the water was tested to confirm that the system was operating correctly and producing clean, properly treated water.
The final process included:
- Backwashing all treatment units
- Flushing the system until the water was clear
- Checking for leaks and proper operation
- Testing the water before completion
A Reliable System Moving Forward
This service was a complete refresh of the customer’s water treatment setup. By re-bedding both filtration units, rebuilding the valve bodies, replacing the failed pressure tank, and upgrading the tank connections, the system is now in much better condition for reliable everyday use.
The customer can now benefit from improved performance, cleaner water, and a more dependable pressure system.
Thank You
A sincere thank you to the customer for trusting us again this year. Barlow Water Systems appreciates the opportunity to review the system, make the necessary improvements, and help ensure the home has dependable water treatment moving forward.
